About the Author

Rona Roberts, author of Sweet, Sweet Sorghum: Kentucky's Golden Wonder, writes and speaks about the wonders and pleasures of Kentucky food, farms, and farmers. She hosts Savoring Kentucky at www.savoringkentucky.com. Savoring Kentucky grows from Rona's delight in the great pleasures of eating and drinking what Kentucky’s soil, water, air, and growers produce. Savoring Kentucky celebrates what is positive and fine about Kentucky's food, farms, farmers, restaurants, chefs, and markets. Rona intends to help change views about the promise of Kentucky agriculture, and particularly hopes to contribute to the great cause of our freedom from dependence on other states and other countries for our food and sustenance. Concern and commitment to this cause--true "homeland security"--have risen steadily for Rona since September 12, 2011. Like foods that are grown and processed in Kentucky, Rona is "Kentucky Proud." She studied at Oil Valley Elementary, Wayne County Elementary, Monticello High School, and the University of Kentucky. In college she studied Music and English, and then Human Communication, and finally Organizational Communication. Rona’s most formative adult learning took place when she served as a Community Development Volunteer in the U. S. Peace Corps in the Philippines. Rona began her work as an independent researcher and facilitator in 1979. In 1983, with Steve Kay, she co-founded Roberts & Kay, Inc., a firm that offers qualitative research and facilitation. In other words, Rona's main professional work for 32 years involves helping people find things out and talk things through. After some time of working together, Steve assumed a new role in Rona's life: main encourager, favorite man and excellent husband. Between them, Rona and Steve have three thirty-something sons, two wonderful daughters-in-law, and two small, precious grandchildren. Rona is a native of Monticello, Kentucky, where her parents farmed and taught school. Rona and Steve co-host weekly Cornbread Suppers every Monday at 6 PM. Be assured pure Kentucky sorghum graces the table each week. You're invited. No RSVP needed.

I have to say as somebody who grew up eating sorghum all my life this book brought back a-lot of memories of Sunday dinners and conversations about sorghum that people probably only have in Kentucky. Wish I woulda had this book back then, it would have settled a number of arguments about sorghum and molasses, what's what and how it's done.

The book is beautiful, the photographs have a style to them that feels like home and there's a great balance between history, pertinent information and recipes (the spoon bread and sorghum caramels are on my list to try real soon). Plus there's a reference or two to modern cooking and how some things aren't necessarily as new as they might appear to be.

Beautifully and entertainingly written but also, useful - a credit to Kentucky for sure.

I just finished Rona Roberts' Sweet, Sweet Sorghum: Kentucky's Golden Wonder last night reading in bed. What a delightful read....and then, when I'd finished, I started going back into the book looking for what I wanted to make upon my waking. Would it be the Magical Mix (sorghum and softened butter)? Would it be the Sorghum Vinaigrette on the greens I would harvest for our evening meal? Rona writes in such a way that you can just about taste what she is talking about. I am buying more books for my California family and friends along with some local sorghum for Christmas presents....what a wonderful way to share the delight of author Rona Roberts and Kentucky's Golden Wonder.

I am new to sorghum molasses. After reading Sweet, Sweet Sorghum, Kentucky's Golden Wonder I bought a jar and can see why the author wrote an entire book about it. It is an extraordinary, ambrosia-like product that makes me spontaneously close my eyes, smile and say mmmmmm almost every time every time I taste it. The book is short and sweet telling you just what you need to appreciate the history and environmental, nutritional and economic benefits of sorghum. It also has practical info about where to find sorghum and how to store and use it. The photographs are beautiful and in some inexplicable way make me relax just by looking at them. The 8 recipes are gems-- perfectly explained as if the author is in the kitchen with you, talking you through the finer points. I highly recommend Ruth's Apple Pancakes as a way to savor sorghum. I am glad to have sorghum in my life and glad to have this book to help me make the very most of it! Give this book and a jar of sorghum to the people you love.
