More Old Menus

September 3, 2018

I’ve been going through old files, getting ready for the American Cuisine and Hospitality Symposium in New Orleans in a couple of weeks. I was there at the first Symposium in 1983, and I wanted to get a sense of what things were like back then.  At the time, we were very focused on California Cuisine – I was the restaurant critic at New West Magazine – and I  came upon this interesting letter.

Only ate once at Glen Oaks, but still remember the delicious flavors. Saute of calamari with sauced asparagus. The best!

Do you know what happened to the Glen Oaks Restaurant and to Forrest and Marilee Childs?

Big Sur is my spiritual home and I had many delightful meals at Glen Oaks, notably a family meal prepared with us in mind. We enjoyed the special attention from the chefs/owners that night. The chefs moved and there have been a few different restaurants in the same location. Big Sur Roadhouse is the current occupant and a great stop still channeling the Glen Oaks atmosphere. Thank you for posting this and sending my mind back to some wonderful meals.
